A lot of people ask, “What do I need to do to have a private painting class?” Since my minimum is 6 participants, the first thing to do is find 5 or more interested painters. If you have 5 friends, relatives or kids over 8 years old, you have yourself the makings for a private party in your own home or other location. My maximum number is 40 painters. We can paint anywhere with tables and chairs, which, besides the painters, is the only thing you need to provide. We can paint in places other than home that you may have access to, such as churches, restaurants or coffee shops, with permission of course! Acrylic stains fabrics, but wipes off of tables, chairs and hard surfaces just fine. Just keep in mind, people need a bit more space than they do to eat a meal. I like to give each person about two feet of width and depth at a table so they have space to work in.
Second, I require a $100 deposit which can be applied toward your class cost of $30 per person. Deposit is refundable if the party is cancelled with two weeks or more notice. I require at least two weeks notice if you are going to cancel a private class as I have reserved that date for you and need time to fill the spot with something else.
Business partners do not pay a deposit and we can discuss who is in charge of ticketing, I am happy to do that part. Many venues are happy to host the event as it gets new faces in the door.
“What if I cant get 5 people to paint with me, or don’t have enough room?” Well, if you can get 3 people besides yourself we can reserve a date for you at Free To Be Studio for just yourselves. I can have up to 10 at my home studio, so if you just want to paint with your friends exclusively but don’t have the space at your home, we can paint here as well. Or, I can still come and paint if there are less people as long as you pay the required minimum of $180 (cost for 6 painters at $30 ea)
Another question I get is, “What do I need to supply for the painting party?” and “Can we drink?” Both great questions. You supply tables, table coverings, chairs and painters, and I bring everything else, including paper towels, and water cups, and of course the canvases, easels, paint and brushes. Feel free to eat and drink whatever you like at your private party!
Many people are surprised to hear that I don’t charge to travel within the Portland area. I do charge to travel outside of a 15 mile radius of my home studio in Milwaukie, and charge $1 per mile to travel outside of that area for the time and mileage. Most of the time I am booked about a month out. Most of the classes I offer are $30 with the exception of larger canvas paintings such as 12 x 24 which we use for the Ball Jar Flowers which is $35 and the Paint Your Pet class which is $40 due to the extra preparation needed.
“Can I choose my own painting?” Yes!! That is the best part! Choose from the gallery , or paintings you may have seen on the Free To Be Art Facebook Page. The one thing I can’t do is copy someone else’s art or something you have seen on a different painting site, but you can show me what you like so I can find inspiration to draw from. I have been known to create a new painting just for a client.
